Buckshead

Buckshead is an area north and east of Truro and comprises a number of large scattered properties dispersed from Buckshead House (Grade 2 Listed – built early C19th but extended later) which is located beside the main road from Truro to Bodmin.

Buckshead Polwhele House School

One of the larger properties in the area is now a school. This is Polwhele which is a beautiful and historic Manor House with records that go back to Norman times. The earliest parts of the existing house were built in the 16th century and various granite arches incorporated into the existing building date back to this period. John Polwhele is recorded as a knight representing Cornwall during the reign of Queen Mary Tudor. As can be imagined various changes and additions have been added over the centuries. These appear to have stabilised in the late 19th century. In the late 20th century the family home became part preparatory school and then expanded to older pupils. It is now well known for providing education for promising equestrians and performing artists. It provides for age ranges from nursery to pre-prep to prep and then to seniors aged 16.

Another well known building in the area is at Penmount. It was built in the early/late 18th century and is a Grade 2 Listed building which is now a crematorium, owned by Cornwall Council. It has two separate chapels and the buildings themselves sit in extensive, peaceful, and attractive grounds. The crematorium became one in the mid 1950s. Prior to this there had been a number of distinguished owners of the property, most notable perhaps was Charles Henderson, a Cornish Historian. Nearby there is a large courtyard housing primarily private tenants.

To the south the area is crossed by the main Cornish Railway Line going west-east; Penzance-Plymouth, and
ultimately London Paddington.
